Aug. 18th, 2010 03:18 pmThis post contains some introspective fangirling that gets kind of mushy. It's actually kind of embarrassing because I usually try to contain my hardcore fangirling for the proper place and time, so I'm putting this behind a cut.
I've been thinking recently regarding my current interests in American music. Until this past year or so, it had been such a long time since I genuinely considered myself a fan of an American artist. My musical alligences have resided with J-rock for quite a number of years. Last year I had a brief flirtation with German music, in the form of Tokio Hotel and Cinema Bizarre, but that interest has waned since Cinema Bizarre broke up. And then who should come into my life last year, but Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert. I discovered each of them at two different times, but as soon as I started learning about them I was hooked.
I have this huge fucking outpouring of love for the both of them. They seem hard working, smart, and make great music. It also doesn't hurt that they're both gorgeous. But, why do they really catch my eye when so many other American artists have failed to grab my attention? They're both about being different and embracing it (and they do it in a really positive and beautiful way). As someone who felt out of place since the time I was in middle school, this means a lot to me. They tell people that it's okay to be different and encourage them to express themselves.
I love Gaga because she's such a sweetheart to her fans. I've never seen an artist express more love towards their fans. She's even stated that she's our Mama Monster and we're her Little Monsters. She gives it everything she's got for us, wants us all to love and accept ourselves, to know that it's okay to feel like a freak (because she's one, too). I also love that she always seems like such a strong, independent woman, who's not afraid to speak her mind.
I love Adam because it takes a lot of courage to be who he is. He's pretty much the only visibly gay male artist in the American pop industry right now. He's not afraid to embrace that and receives a lot of scrutiny because of it (ex. the AMAs). I love that he's not afraid to glam it up (and encourages his fans to glam it up and feel good about themselves). There's something about his balance of masculinity and femininity that I just find undeniably attractive. He also always seems so personable and sweet.
All of these things really set them apart for me, as artists who are really worth my time, money, and devotion. I love people who aren't afraid to be different.

Date: 2010-08-20 06:25 pm (UTC)I like Lady Gaga for the same reasons, and of course she's one of very few bisexual artists out there, which is great. And she's so quirky and different, and her performances are so artistic.
I really should get into Adam Lambert, you make him sound awesome.

Date: 2010-08-20 09:26 pm (UTC)Ah, I forgot to mention Gaga's bisexuality! I love how she's so supportive of the gay community, too.
That's cause he is awesome! If you'd like, I'd be happy to enable you. I'll even start by leaving this video here...
