I don't normally make a habit of exchanging hugs with people I don't know. But if it does happen, I find that it tends to happen at anime cons, usually while I'm in cosplay. Most of the time, I don't really mind receiving hugs from strangers at cons (as long as the person doesn't full out glomp me, or isn't too touchy feely). My favorite instance was at ACen, when I was in my Edward Elric cosplay. A girl dressed as Al walked by, and when she saw me she joyfully yelled "Brother!". We mutually embraced in a happy "family" reunion.

At least you getting hugged by strangers is cool. My getting hugged by strangers was awkward in the extreme. Especially since I had an alcoholic beverage in my hand and that was the "alcohol is the world's greatest evil" side of the family. Whoops. Way to make a first impression. My mother, of course, found the whole thing hilarious, she told me, with her own beer in her hand.
